Anita Smith Hawkins,
Ph.D. joined the public health faculty at Morgan in August 2003,
coming from a private consulting practice. She has over twenty years
of professional experience in the field of health and human services,
working with public agencies, health careorganizations, institutes
of higher education and community-based organizations. This includes
government service as a public health analyst, deputy director of
a non profit substance abuse prevention organization, technical
assistance provider and external program evaluator for community-based
organizations and over ten years of experience teaching graduate
students in research methods and program management. Under the public
health program at Morgan, Dr. Hawkins has taught research methods
for the master level students, was among the faculty overseeing
the student internship requirement and advised masters students
on the development of the Integrating Experience (i.e., the capstone
project for the MPH) and developed the initial proposal for an Executive
MPH program. In the new School of Public Health and Policy, Dr.
Hawkins is a member of the Department of Health Policy and Management.
She developed the health services planning and evaluation courses
for the department's doctoral and masters concentrations in Health
Services Management. With her PhD in community health education,
Dr. Hawkins is interested in issues related to health communication
(e.g., health literacy, risk communication, cultural competency,
etc.) and age related differences in health communication needs.
She is focusing her interest in health communication on research
efforts that explore HIV risk behaviors and the identification of
prevention best practices. Dr. Hawkins currently oversees the New
Minority Male Health Project at Morgan, which through its community
partnerships, co-sponsors health screening events for African American
men in west Baltimore, provides technical assistance to faith-based
organizations to plan and implement HIV prevention programs, and
is partnering with public and community-based organizations to address
the health issues of the recently released ex-offender.
